Reading at Herne Bay School and Seashells Nursery

We love reading at our school. Our teachers read a range of exciting stories with their classes at least three times a day. Across the school we have inviting reading areas, welcoming children to sit, relax and enjoy a good book! Every class has a designated time each day where the children can read for pleasure. They can do this with a friend, on their own, with a school book or a book brought in from home.

To support the children in learning how to read we also teach Read Write Inc in Nursery, Reception and Year One each day. Lessons include learning to read and write sounds and words. We put children into smaller groups to support their reading and promote rapid progress. The children read a book over three days focussing on reading with pace, expression and to support comprehension.

Year R have introduced a daily book time this year where the children can re-visit what they have learnt in Read Write Inc, listen to many stories, explore texts and read with an adult.

In Key Stage 1 every child has a daily reading lesson where they read either with an adult or independently. Similar to Read Write Inc they exposed to a text for a week. During this time they are introduced to the language, key words and encouraged to answer challenging questions.

Children are provided with a colour banded book that is appropriate for their reading level. You can record all of their lovely reading at home in our new reading records for your child to share with their teacher. Each child will be provided with a bookmark to support their current reading level.

Children also take a book of their own choice from the class library to share at home each week.

We are very fortunate to have many volunteers who come each week to listen to our children read but we would welcome more. Please discuss with your class teacher if you can spare some time.
