Our curriculum content has been designed alongside subject leaders to take account of the legal requirements of the Early Years Foundations Stage (EYFS) Framework and the Primary National Curriculum whilst at the same time ensuring it meets the needs of all our children. It is ambitious, builds cultural capital and takes into account the context of our school locally.

Our community is at the heart of our teaching and learning and we have strong links with local organisations and community groups, such as Herne Bay Junior School, Christ Church St Andrews Church, Herne Bay library, Herons Leisure Centre and local museums.  In addition to its coastal location, Herne Bay has a rich history which enriches children’s learning.

Our play and knowledge-based curriculum holds literature at its heart as we believe it is the key to exploring and making sense of the world around us, how events in the past shape our present and how current events may affect our future.

At Herne Bay Infant and Nursery School our children in both our Nursery and Reception years follow the EYFS Framework.  The Early Years is a vital stage for children as it helps prepare them for more formal teaching and lifelong learning. We want children’s early years’ experience to be a happy, active, exciting, fun and safe time which enables every individual child to achieve their full potential.  We believe that that all children learn by ‘doing’ and our ambition is to embed our children in Nursery and Reception with a love of learning that they can take with them on their onward educational journey.

The skills and knowledge that our children acquire in the Early Years are consolidated and built upon through our Key Stage One curriculum.  We strive to make our learning experiences relevant, practical and engaging, encouraging children to become independent thinkers.  Our curriculum supports the school’s and British values and children are supported to strive for personal and academic success whilst respecting the thoughts and achievements of others.

Our curriculum reflects our increasingly diverse community, this diversity brings a richness to our school which we celebrate. We strive for all children to feel a sense of belonging within the school learning community and to develop an understanding of people, families and communities beyond their own.
