Eligibility for Pupil Premium Funding
The government is currently allocating additional funding to schools in the form of ‘Pupil Premium’. If you are eligible for this funding your child may be entitled to additional support in school such as specialised support, subsidised clubs, and enrichment activities.
Although your child will be entitled to a Universal Infant Free School Meal in Year R – Year 2, it is important that you sign up to the Free School Meal funding scheme, to check whether you may be eligible for support. If you are eligible for Targeted Free School Meals, this will entitle your child to Pupil Premium, and will allow the school to offer targeted support. To be eligible for Free School Meal funding, you must be in receipt of Universal Credit. To be entitled to Targeted Free School Meal funding, and therefore Pupil Premium, your household income must also be below £7,400 per annum.

Pupil Premium at Herne Bay Infant School
Here at Herne Bay Infant School we use our pupil premium funding to diminish the difference in achievement of pupils eligible for pupil premium and other pupils. We ensure that the teaching and learning opportunities meet the needs of all pupils, and that appropriate provision is made for all pupils who belong to vulnerable groups. This includes ensuring that the needs of pupils who receive pupil premium funding are adequately assessed and addressed.
We recognise that not all pupil premium children are disadvantaged and that some disadvantaged pupils may not be eligible for pupil premium.
We have identified the following as main barriers to learning for our PP pupils.
- at least 50% of children are entering Reception below the expected level in all 12 areas of EYFS for GLD
- in EYFS poor communication and language skills as well as poor social skills particularly managing feelings and behaviour.
- poor behaviour for learning
- poor emotional wellbeing and resilience
- low attendance and lateness
- parental well-being and health, school engagement and commitment to engaging with their child’s education.
When making decisions on how to allocate our pupil premium funding grant effectively we have drawn on research from a range sources, most prominently the Education Endowment Foundation’s Teaching and Learning Toolkit. We have also assessed the impact of interventions from last year and thought carefully about the specific and individual needs of the children.

Pupil Premium Plus
In 2013 the DfE introduced Pupil Premium Plus for looked after and previously looked after children. In doing this, the DfE acknowledged the possible impact of trauma and loss in some children’s lives and the key role of schools in supporting children who have had a difficult start in life.
Who is eligible for Pupil Premium Plus?
Pupil Premium Plus is available to pupils from Reception age to Year 11 in state-funded education in England who:
- Are in local authority care in England.
- Have been adopted from care in England or Wales.
- Left care under a Special Guardianship Order (SGO).
- Left care under a Child Arrangements Order (formerly known as a Residence Order).
